People and Places Trolley Tour Highlights Pittsburgh Architecture

A class of fourth-grade students from Pittsburgh Greenfield, a PreK-8 neighborhood school, participated in a trolley tour, “Pittsburgh People & Places,” on May 11, as a part of the Pittsburgh History and Landmark Foundation’s (PHLF) ongoing immersive educational experiences for K-12 students.

The tour features students being picked up at their schools on Molly's Trolley buses, and takes them on a tour of Downtown Pittsburgh, highlighting landmarks and places. The tour includes a stop at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center and is designed to give the students a sense of the places named for people who made important contributions to the life and history of our city.

Some of the figures highlighted on the tour include General John Stanwix, Frankie Mae Pace, Andy Warhol, John Heinz, Roberto Clemente, David Lawrence, August Wilson, and Rachel Carson, among many others.

Pittsburgh Greenfield students rounded out the tour at a three-acre park that is located atop I-579 and reconnects the Lower Hill District to Downtown Pittsburgh. The park, which opened in 2021, was named in honor of Frankie Mae Pace a Hill District community activist who helped fight back against the devastating effects of urban renewal.

The People and Places tour is part of the PHLF's ongoing "Building Pride/ Building Character" educational experiences planned for K-12 students in 2023. Other activities throughout the year will include walking tours of the Strip District and a scavenger hunt featuring the identification of architectural details throughout the grounds and buildings of Station Square.

This program is funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, with support from other donors.
